Roopkala Kendro, situated at the heart of the capital of technological exploration of Kolkata, Sector-V, Salt Lake, works relentlessly to create conscious artistic minds to enrich the long and glorious heritage of Cinema Art of Bengal. It is not only a film school that caters to the interests of cine lovers, but it is the only ‘Social Communication Film Institute’ of India.
Germinated as an idea in the mind of a great thinker, visionary, and legend of Indian Cinema, Sri Satyajit Ray, Roopkala Kendro took its shape in the year 2001. The first batch of students had passed out in 2004, and almost immediately, they started creating creative impressions in Bengali Cinema. Within a few years, Students of Roopkala Kendro created an everlasting impression in the Film Industry and bagged critical acclaim from all over the world.
With continuous active cooperation and direction from the Government of West Bengal, Roopkala Kendro has acquired its position among the most sought-after grooming centers of the conscious & creative minds for film art.
The two main pillars of the Institute are the Training Wing and the Production Wing. Roopkala Kendro offers a 2-year Post Graduate Diploma in 6 streams of Development Communication, Direction, Motion Picture Photography, Editing, Sound Design, and Animation Creation & Direction.
The uniqueness of the course is that students are trained through a learning by-doing method, and there is immense scope for hands-on skills building.
Roopkala Kendro is a social communication film institute where students are trained to conceptualize ideas, write scripts, and execute the methods properly to transcribe their ideas into audio-visual events to be experienced on screen.
The methodology of training that is being followed here is one to one basis, and language never becomes a barrier. We consider each student as a unique character having a unique history and outlook toward every sphere of life, and try to impart the idea of art and craft and teach them how to express themselves using the most modern technology.
We believe that the idea of art is not constant and has been changing over time, and to create art, one should not forget his or her roots and should speak of it, exploiting the language of cinematic art. That is why we always inspire students to tell his or her own story and not to get into the practice of a lifeless art form.
We do not provide a hostel for the students, and that way during the training period, they do not feel isolated from society, and along with developing sensibility, they interpret society in their way, which gets reflected in their project work.
It is often felt that in order to practice cinematic art, exposure to other art forms necessary, and that is why we have developed our library, where books on various art forms are available, as well as numerous books on modern technology and methods.
Roopkala Kendro has created a long heritage of students who are continuously contributing to the fabric of Bengali Cinema as well as Indian Cinema. Those who are willing to take admission here will get the chance to be a part of this long and glorious heritage.
