About Direction

The Direction Department students of Roopkala Kendro are imparted with a holistic training in filmmaking. We try to strike a balance between theory and practice in a sharing and participatory mode. Students are provided with hands-on training in idea-development, script-writing, production planning, shooting and other related technical inputs like editing, sound designing, camera etc. They are exposed to fiction and non-fictional inputs semester-wise. An understanding of socio cultural and political scenario provides the basic framework of the course.

The course teaches history and development of cinema and its various movements - both national and international. Film viewing, film analysis and organising workshops with practising filmmakers form an important part of the course which make students aware about the medium. The Direction students are placed with Cinematography, Editing and Sound Design disciplines in the first semester before they move into specialization. The common platform of inputs enriches them immensely. Group Projects are undertaken semester-wise. Participation and sharing with fellow team members is a very important part of the curriculum.

Direction Department 4th Semester Acting Workshop.

Course Objective

The Direction Course Gives emphasis on the aesthetics & techniques of making Film, Tv & web series & other programmes keeping in mind social reality & responsibilities of an conscious human being. Orientation on different Art forms & it’s connection with Cinema is taught from the beginning giving planned emphasis on both Indian to western aesthetics. Our focus is also both in fiction and non-fiction reality of Expression. Classes and workshops in the course tries to impart a holistic view of appreciation of Cinema with solid inputs on technical matters both theoretically & technically. Understanding of Indian Socio – cultural and political scenario will provide the basic framework of the course. Finally, the course will integrate the consciousness of the student as an Artist who is technically brilliant enough in using technology for different forms of expression as and when required. It can be said that from generating interesting Ideas to Discover & create a Complete film will be the journey of the conscious student here who will be enlightened enough to work in any Film Industry or commercial organizations wherever needed or required.

Course Facilities

The objective of the course is to initiate holistic approaches of cinema in which theory and practical will hold hand to hand to transform a student from a new comer to an Artist with social responsibilities. With departments own Editing set ups, cameras & own class room etc. students are given ample inputs both theoretical and practical.

  • In the 1st semester everyone learns everything, from Script writing to Editing, Cinematography & Sound design. They learn the basics of film making & production. They also learn to handle a team. They discover the coexistence of different Art forms & it’s relationship with Cinema. They also know about the Development of filmic language era wise, in this semester. Practical , hands on classes make them confident from confused souls.
  • In the 2nd semester students are taught theoretical & hand on trainings on narrative fiction film makings. They learn advanced script writing & film making methods. Analysis of different types of films & works of famous national & International Film makers make them enlightened. They go through different workshops like Mise-en-Scene , Make up etc in this semester. They also make their own team in this semester to complete their term ending Dialogue exercise.
  • In the 3rd semester, students go through theoretical and practical inputs on Non fiction films of different genres. They practice hands on short documentary film making, meets industry professional Documentary makers. They are also given inputs on Multi camera exercise for games shows, Musical programs, news etc. They also get in this semester the hands on inputs on Production design. Ultimately, they make a team to do their own term ending Documentary film from idea selection to shooting and then complete it through post production works.
  • In the 4th semester students make their final Diploma film with their team. But, before that, they are given inputs on Social communication Spot Exercise (Advertisement) & ultimately each of them make one Spot on any one social issue. They also get workshop inputs on ‘Actor handling '. After Learning all these they ultimately make their Diploma Film with their student team from a complete script created by them, going through different phases of planning, shooting, post production works etc. . Thus they are initiated through a methodical yet holistic approach of teaching by which they make themselves socially conscious Artists from a sensitive yet confused soul.
